When we first think of who gets Brazilian waxes, we automatically think of super models or normal sized women. This is absolutely not true. Every woman wants to feel confident and beautiful. Brazilian waxing crosses all barriers from thin women to curvaceous women and everyone in between. As a plus size women and Esthetician who’s been waxing for eight years, I’ve encountered every shape, size and color.
The difference is that plus size women are often embarrassed to go to a salon because they are insecure about their weight or what the Esthetician might think. Those thoughts definitely crossed my mind before my first Brazilian but the difference was I was fresh out of beauty school and starting my first job as a Wax Specialist. I had no choice but to strip down in front of my new coworkers to be as naked as the day I was born.
I was embarrassed because I was the only bigger girl there, but those thoughts completely left my mind after the waxer laid the first strip. Let me tell you, once she pulled the first labia strip my life flashed before my eyes and I was not thinking about my fat or extra skin. As I lay there, I kept telling myself the results would be worth it and kept thinking, “no more shaving, no more trying to do acrobats in the shower and no more razor burn”.
Then, my waxer told me the words that no one wants to hear while you’re spread eagle on a table in front of your new coworkers, “lift your legs up to your chest, it’s time for the butt strip”. Now a whole different thought ran through my mind, but I survived, and I make it through. I was so happy I did! Now eight years later, I haven’t touched a razor since. My hair is finer, softer and has very minimal hair growing back.
As a professional Esthetician, I am not thinking about the size of your body, the way your vagina looks or how much extra skin you may have. I am solely focused on doing my job, getting all the hairs and making sure you walk out more confident then when you walked in.
I frequently get asked these questions from my plus size clients and today I will answer all of them.
Q: I am a plus size woman, can I get waxed?
A: Being curvy or plus sized shouldn’t prevent you from getting waxed. Estheticians see all types of women with all types of bodies. Everyone is different, and that is totally ok. Their job is to make you feel as comfortable as possible and ease any of your anxieties. First things first, you do not need to apologize for your body or your size!
Q: Will your wax table be able to hold me and how am I going to maneuver my body on this table?
A: Most massage tables can hold up 500 pounds plus but always communicate with your Esthetician if you do have any concerns. We want you to be comfortable! During the process, if your Esthetician needs you to hold or move anything, she will ask. It’s that simple. Be prepared to be hands on during the process. Women that have been getting waxed regularly will tell you that eventually you will get so used to your Esthetician’s techniques that you will learn when and where to hold the skin taut during the service.
Q: What should I wear to a waxing appointment?
A: You will have to take off everything from the waist down, but typically it’s best to wear loose fitting clothing or a dress so that you can just slip off the undergarments. I usually recommend wearing something easy and breezy, but most importantly, wear whatever makes you feel the most comfortable.
Q: What type of wax should the Esthetician use?
A: This really depends on the place where you get waxed. There are many different types of wax and different techniques. I suggest you use a hard wax, especially with Brazilian waxing. Hard wax is a lot gentler on intimate areas. It also results in a cleaner wax with less breakage of the hair. Your skin will be less irritated and the effects will last longer.
To make your waxing experience easier, I suggest following these four steps:
- Let your hair grow. It is important that your hair is at least ¼ of an inch long. This means no shaving for around three weeks for the best results. (Yess girl three weeks, but it’s so worth it!)
- Take some Advil before your waxing appointment, it will help ease the pain.
- Tell your Esthetician about any skin sensitivities or allergies so they can determine the right type of wax and before and after care for you to use.
- Gently exfoliate the skin 24 hours before your appointment and 72 hours after your wax to help prevent ingrown hairs.
When looking for a salon to get your Brazilian done at, I suggest to:
- Make sure they are reputable salon, check the Esthetician’s credentials, which should be clearly present in the salon/spa.
- Go to a specialty wax center or spa, somewhere they only do waxing.
- Check for yelp reviews or any other review platform before booking an appointment.
- I can’t stress this enough, somewhere that is clean and that doesn’t DOUBLE DIP! (gross)
- Connect with a size friendly Esthetician, someone who will make you feel comfortable and keep you coming back.
If you were on the fence about booking your waxing appointment, I hope that I’ve given you a little boost to book your appointment!
